Chicken Run

Our local JV (neighborhood association) hosts classes, workshops, chess tournaments and other activities. They also have a small flock of chickens. On our daily walk to the park, Leia (the dog) and I stop to gaze through the fence at these very handsome birds, although I suspect our interests are not entirely aligned. There is a faded sign and a number to call for more information about getting started with your own urban chickens.

I do know, intellectually, that a chicken in the front yard must be classified under ‘Bad Ideas.’ But the price of eggs these days, man, the price of eggs…

A dear friend who has been with PETA since its start just told me about his visit to a “rescue chicken” colony in Oahu. Unfortunately, it’s next door to a cock fight arena. But sounds like these chicks have been rescued (from dinner?) very nicely. Xo, Nan

P.S. When these pop up in my email, I wonder, do I know someone named Santiago? Pls. keep ‘em coming.

Apparently, the JV (Junta de vecinos) chicken project is now self-sustaining through egg sales. The chickens seem pretty happy running around (and eating the caterpillars I’ve been flinging to them through the fence). It sounds like the rescue-chicken colony in Oahu is well placed to, well, rescue chickens. I won’t tell you what I had for lunch though. By the way, you were my first comment, which was such a little rush of dopamine – ha. Hope you continue to enjoy! Tu amig@, Santiago 😉

        Here’s your 2nd comment:

This is about a chicken farm outside of Sta. Cruz, CA, where a dear friend took me one day to see the dancing chickens, which you can too by clicking the embedded link here: https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/egg-vending-machine-at-glaum-ranch-aptos-california

They’re dressed in different costumes to reflect the season. My fave was the 4th of July red, white & blue one, dancing to “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy.” It’s a truly wonderful experience, so wonderful, I made him keep feeding in dollar bills (all it cost then) until he cried that he could collect no more eggs!
